Immerse yourself in a unique Aboriginal art experience and discover the stories, symbols, and cultural knowledge that have been passed down through generations on Arrernte Country. This hands-on workshop offers visitors the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Aboriginal art and its importance as a way of sharing knowledge, preserving culture, and maintaining a strong connection to Country.
Led by a local Aboriginal guide, you will learn about the traditional techniques used in dot painting and explore the meaning behind commonly used symbols in Western Arrernte artwork. Throughout the workshop, your guide will share insights into how Aboriginal people use art to tell stories about the land, family, animals, water sources, journeys, and significant cultural sites. You will also learn how art varies across different Aboriginal nations throughout Australia, with each region having its own unique styles, symbols, stories, and cultural interpretations.
As part of the experience, you will create your own painted souvenir to take home, inspired by the knowledge and techniques shared during the session. Whether you are an experienced artist or have never painted before, this workshop is designed to be enjoyable, engaging, and suitable for all skill levels.
The workshop provides a meaningful opportunity to connect with one of the world's oldest living cultures while gaining a greater appreciation for the diversity of Aboriginal art across Australia. You will learn how storytelling has traditionally been expressed through art, and how these visual representations continue to play an important role in sharing culture.
By the end of the session, you will leave with more than just a piece of artwork you will take away a deeper understanding of Western Arrernte culture, the significance of Aboriginal art, and the enduring connection between people, stories, and Country in Central Australia.
